The winemaker's personality is reflected in the character of this Cabernet Sauvignon. A bright red wine that exhibits the classic Pinot Noir aromas of red fruit, especially sour cherries, complemented by the spicy and smoky character of the oak barrel in which was aged for 8 months. Dry, balanced, with discreet tannins and a lingering and elegant after-taste.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Viile Metamorfosis was aged for six months in used Hungarian oak and comes in at 13.5% alcohol. A ne deal, this has some bite on the nish and a fresh feel with lifted fruit on that nish. A bit too tight just now, this is not yet very expressive, but perhaps it will show better on release (this will be available in the USA in April 2021). It might well need another six months or so in the cellar even then. Today, it is not particularly fruity and doesn't seem terribly ripe, relying instead on its structure and precision. Overall, this precise Pinot needs to show more expressive fruit and come into better balance—if it can. It has some promise, and the price certainly makes it a bargain for a nice food wine.

This bright ruby red wine displays aromas of black fruits like blackberries and cassis, toast and pepper flavors rendered by 18 month ageing in large oak barrels. The palate is lavish, well balanced, with ripe tannins and a relentless aftertaste.

The 2016 Folklore Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for four months in used Hungarian oak and comes in at 14.3% alcohol. Tight, a little bitter and perhaps a bit unusual in its avor prole, with hints of herbs and a bit of a high-toned nuance, this is nonetheless a wine with ne concentration and even better structure for very modest money. It nishes with a wave of red- fruit avors. In many ways, this is a lot of wine for the modest price, but I would like to see some evidence it can come into balance. It will not be available in the USA until April 2021, which gives us some extra time anyway. Even then, you might be well advised to stick it in the cellar for another year or so.

A vividly coloured wine that reveals pleasant aromas of black cherry and plum. Full-bodied on the palate with sweet tannins andc spicy notes. The finish is elegant and lingering. 

The 2018 Viile Metamorfosis Fetească Neagră was aged for six months in second-use Hungarian oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This is a ne bargain in its youth. Where it goes from here will be a good question, but for now, it punches above its weight. It seems reasonably full in the mouth, tight on the nish and tightly wound in general. Dry and serious, with blackberries on the nish, this has a certain freshness I appreciated a lot. It's not a wine with a big sweet-and-fruity demeanor. For comparison and contrast, try the 2017 Domeniile Săhăteni Fetească Neagră Artisan in this issue, which has a very diferent style. This Viile Metamorfosis emphasizes elegance more than fruitiness. It will be interesting to see where this goes as it ages, but it's a no-brainer bargain today as a restaurant wine or house pour.

Jidvei lies in the Valea Târnavelor valley and has been known as a wine country since 1200.
